Peninsular hub, Portland, easily bridges the gap between historic port and modern city, home to a range of cultural sight, bordered by sandy beaches and within easy reach of a variety of water-based activities.
Some of the most exciting scenery in eastern Maine is found along Route 1, which runs for eight miles just outside the Canadian border. The Byway climbs the slopes of Peekaboo Mountain, affording a spectacular view of Grand Lake and the western mountains of New Brunswick, Canada. A main thoroughfare connecting Aroostook County to "Downeast Maine", Route 1 is one of the state's most popular sites for wildlife observation and photography.
Starting at the Danforth-Weston border, the Byway travels northward to the Weston-Orient town line.
