Description
The Dead River is located in West Forks, Maine, very close to the Kennebec River. It has 16 miles of whitewater rafting, Maine's longest rafting experience. The river starts at Grand Falls which is a great sight to see. It is a thirty foot waterfall as wide as the river, perfect to set the mood for any rafting team about to take the whitewater by force. This river's dam releases 7000 cfs (cubic feet per second) throughout the season which makes for a lot of fun and froth!
The river is rated as an overall class IV and its rapids range from class III to IV almost the entire way until the end where the Kennebec and the Dead River meet. A few of the rapids on this river are the Mindfields, Spencer Rips, Humpty Dumpty, Elephant Rock, Mile Long Rapids, and Poplar Hill Falls. Feel the adrenaline rush when pushing your weight and raft through raging swells and then dropping over the other side of them for 16 miles. A guaranteed thrill for anyone who dares to adventure!
The season for the Dead River begins in May and runs through mid-October. On May 5th and 12th, the dam releases the most water for the season and creates awesome days for incredible rafting on the river. The minimum age for guided trips is fourteen years old. This river, like the Kennebec, has several types of trips available ranging from one day to a long weekend trip. Dare to overtake the Dead and don’t worry about the name, it’s not as scary as it sounds.
