Peninsular hub, Portland, easily bridges the gap between historic port and modern city, home to a range of cultural sight, bordered by sandy beaches and within easy reach of a variety of water-based activities.
Passing through Fish River Valley in the heart of Maine, the popular Route 11 joins the state to the Canadian Province of New Brunswick. Along the route, expansive grasslands blend gracefully with gently rolling hills and colorful meadows of wildflowers. And, glassy-topped lakes bespeckle the landscape with a shimmering of blue.
The byway begins its journey at the Nashville-Portage Lake town line and continues northward to Fort Kent.
This region is somewhat unique because of the sparsity of trees in the area. The views here are unhindered and quite dramatic. From the gently rolling hills of Winterville to the postcard scenery of Eagle Lake and Fish Lake, the landscape along Route 11 is a photographer's dream.
